Post-Competition 2018

Hello supporters,
The Purdue IEEE ROV Team has returned from the 2018 MATE International ROV
Competition, and is happy to announce that we placed 18th overall with the 5th highest technical report score and 2nd highest poster score! The overall score table can be found here . ROV Cetacean ran into several technical issues during mission runs, but we were able to score 54 and 68 points in our first and second runs respectively. For the pool team’s efforts in getting the ROV to connect and respond to commands in the final seconds of the last pool run, the team was awarded the “Guts and Glory” Award for overcoming hardship with determination and resolve.

This year, there was a secret bonus mission in addition to the normal mission runs and technical documentation. Teams had to work together to assemble a puzzle underwater by each
placing their own piece. If one teams ROV couldn’t move, they were allowed to use another team’s vehicle. Each team that could place their piece got 5 points, with an additional
number of points proportional to the number of other teams that placed theirs. This mission encouraged teamwork and planning so that all teams could place their piece.

As we wrap up the season, I would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the team throughout the year. I would like to thank MATE, all the volunteers, all the judges, and the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center for putting on this wonderful
competition. I would like to thank our graduating seniors; Carolyn Lewelling, Joshua Berg, Luke McBee, and Ryan McBee for their time on the team, and I hope they succeed in their
careers. And finally, I would like to thank all our members for dedicating over 6,000 hours to make the ROV. I’m proud of how this year turned out, and look forward to next year’s competition in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Feel free to contact Captain Alex Ruffino ( aruffino@purdue.edu ) with any questions or
comments.
