About HEC and our 2019 Summer Internship/Research Associate Program The Hoosier Environmental Council ( www.hecweb.org ) is Indiana’s leading educator and advocate for the environment. HEC works to raise awareness and stimulate discussion about environmental issues in Indiana—and ultimately help change laws, create jobs, protect and improve the environment, and make Indiana a healthier, better place to live and do business. HEC aims to recruit top quality law, graduate, and undergraduate students for its 2019 Summer Internship/Research Associate program. Position ● Position is competitive; six to eight people are selected for the summer ● Law/graduate students are known as “Research Associates” and undergraduates are called “Policy Interns”. ● Interns working in the school year receive course credit & a recommendation from their supervisor; summer Policy Interns/Research Associates receive, in addition, an HEC email address and a modest honorarium. Opportunities in General ● Ability to work on cutting edge environmental policy and legal issues in Indiana ● Potential to publish extractions of work in newspapers, magazines, policy and legal journals ● Have a strong reference for future job opportunities ● Obtain first-hand understanding of how an environmental law and policy organization works ● Participation in occasional HEC sponsored events Expectations ● Build on existing HEC research work; hone in on Indiana ● Focus is on output, not hours, though 20 hours per week for 12 weeks should be the guide ● Work relatively independently, with supervisory guidance principally through scheduled calls and periodic in-person meetings ● Conduct themselves with the highest standards of professionalism with HEC staff, board, volunteers and audiences that HEC engages with ● Honor documents that say “Confidential” ● All research work done in conjunction with HEC staff would be integrated as HEC material To Apply ● Review the proposed intern project ideas in the table on the reverse side of this document, and identify 1 to 2 of interest in a single Organizational Area. HEC will likely have additional project ideas by summertime. ● Send an email, with your resume, cover letter, grade transcript, and two recent writing samples attached (max 5 pages), to Amanda Shepherd, Manager of Outreach, at ashepherd@hecweb.org . ● The body of your email should be a brief, customized note expressing your specific project interest(s) and qualifications. ● The subject header should say “HEC Summer Policy Research”. 1 Specific Internship/Research Associate Opportunities for the Summer of 2019 Organizational Area Potential Project Ideas Water Program Work will center around either the impact of coal ash or the impact of nutrient pollution on Indiana river ecosystems, depending on the skills and preferences of the successful applicant Coal Ash Community Outreach Work with local partners and officials to raise awareness about the presence of coal ash disposal sites and their environmental risks. Present educational programs, attend events, contribute to the HEC’s existing research compilation Indiana Environmental Budget Research Research and compile information about the budgets, staffing and funding of Indiana’s environmental and conservation agencies – the Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Seek out and report on specific cases, incidents or other examples of environmental harm or inaction that demonstrate the consequences of chronic budget cuts for these agencies Environmental Justice Program This project centers around advancing environmental justice in Indianapolis. The intern will help manage messaging, support community initiatives, attend community meetings and help organize volunteers Legal Intern This position is available only to law students who have completed their 1L year and are interested/able to work independently and remotely with HEC’s staff attorneys who are based outside of Indianapolis. The majority of projects will involve legal research and writing legal memos, pleadings, discovery documents, motions, etc… in support of HEC cases in active litigation. There may be opportunity for the intern to attend court hearings and depositions with HEC staff attorneys and work on environmental policy/non-legal matters as needed. Indiana Outdoor Recreation Group/Business Outreach Recruit and work with local, regional and statewide fishing, paddling, hiking, boating and other outdoor recreation-oriented organizations and businesses to encourage their participation in conservation and outdoor recreation policymaking. Present programs, attend events, and maintain a detailed database of contacts. 2
