Apollo Youth Art Contest The NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center is proud to announce the 2019 YOUTH ART CONTEST open to Pre-K through 12th grade students. Apollo Logo “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary” is the theme for the 2019 Youth Art Contest. This NASA-unique theme aims to inspire art through the celebration of Apollo as we push towards returning to the Moon and take the next giant leap in deep space exploration. It is designed to encourage students to use the elements of art to help them understand and explore the role of the Apollo missions in NASA’s advancements in human space exploration. NASA imagery of Earth’s Moon and all aspects of the Apollo missions, will be the inspiration as students make the connection between science, history, and art. To enter, please complete and submit a registration form to the Visitor Center by Saturday, June 1, 2019. 2019 Apollo Youth Art Contest Registration Form All artwork entries must be submitted or postmarked by Saturday, June 15, 2019. Contest Guidelines •Teachers, parents, or youth group leaders must complete and submit a registration form for each student participant by Saturday, June 1, 2019 in order for students artwork to be accepted. Once your registration form has been processed you will receive an artwork identification form by email to submit with the original artwork. You will need to print out and complete a separate artwork identification form for each piece of artwork submitted. •All artwork must depict the contest theme of “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary”. Exceptions will not be judged. •Entries must be submitted or postmarked by Saturday, June 15, 2019. Late entries will not be judged. •All entries will be returned to originator after exhibition at the Visitor Center. •The contest is open to all U.S. Citizens, Nationals and Resident Aliens who are in grades Pre-K through 12. Subject Matter • Apollo Patches Montage of flight crew patches for the Apollo 7 thru Apollo 17 missions. Student’s artwork must depict one of the numerous images collected by NASA from various Apollo missions in support of the theme “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary” which includes images of Earth’s Moon, past and current lunar missions, all aspects of Apollo missions including lunar spacecraft, launch vehicles, astronauts, mission patches, and elements of operations from ground to moon. •Official NASA images with a keyword search can be found here: https://images.nasa.gov/ •Apollo 50th Anniversary official website featuring resources and images can be found here: https://www.nasa.gov/specials/apollo50th/ •Apollo images and student resources can be found here: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/ Artwork •Student’s artwork must be original. Photographs, computer-generated images, and traced images will not be judged. •Student’s must identify the source of the NASA image and mission the artwork is depicting or inspired from on the artwork identification form when submitted. •Media types may consist of crayon, ink, acrylic, water color, colored pencils, pastels, oil paint or plain black pencil. •Size – must be 8.5″ x 11″ or smaller. Matted, mounted, framed, laminated, or folded artwork will NOT be judged. •Each entry must include a fully-completed artwork identification form that is TAPED to the back of the artwork – no paperclips, staples or glue. Judging •An esteemed panel of judges will choose winners in four categories: grades Pre-K – 2, grades 3 – 5, grades 6 – 8, grades 9 – 12. Each category will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. There will also be one Grand Prize winner, one People’s Choice winner, and one NASA’s choice winner. The judges will pay particular attention to the theme “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary” in choosing the winners. •The art will be judged on the basis of four primary artistic elements: ◦CONCEPT – How well does the work relate to the “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary” theme? ◦COMPOSITION – How well does the elements of line and form work together? ◦COLOR – How does color enhance the artwork? ◦EXPRESSION – How creatively does the work covey the idea or emotion? Judging will occur the week of the Opening Reception. Judging will not be open to the public. People’s Choice and NASA’s Choice will be judged during the week of the Opening Reception. Opening Reception & Award Ceremony An Opening Reception of the “Apollo 50th Anniversary Youth Art Exhibit” will be held on Thursday, July 18 from 5 – 7 p.m. Winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m. in the Visitor Center’s Auditorium. Students not in attendance will be informed by email. Youth Art Exhibition The “Apollo’s 50th Anniversary Youth Art Exhibit” entries will be on display at the Visitor Center from Thursday, July 18, 2019 through Saturday, September 7, 2019. Prizes The winners of each grade category, People’s Choice, NASA’s Choice and Grand Prize will receive prizes that will be revealed at a later date! All contest participants will receive an official NASA Certificate of Participation.
